Standard colours of German AFVs since 1955
Since creation of the German Bundeswehr in 1955, it's vehicles for almost 30 years wore overall Yellow Olive livery.
Despite several attempts and trials conducted in 1970s, it was only in 1984 when use of 3-colour camouflage was approved. So-called "Flecktarnanstrich" was a standard 3-colour pattern also used by the US Army and several other NATO countries.
In 1990s, with growing engagement of the German forces in peace-enforcing missions (mostly in desert regions), it became clear that the standard 3-colour scheme is not effective outside European landscape. A set of quickly-applied by the troops, water-soluble and washable camouflage paints for use in desert or steppe zones (the "Umtarnfarben") was developed and introduced in 2000s.
